Mama’s Song

by Ben Beaton

black dog books. Australian, Young Adult. Paperback rrp $16.99

Georgina has run away from home, from her mother, from her school, from her friends, from everything.

Georgina, or George as she likes to be called, has made mistakes in her life and is now living with the consequences. Is she running away from the people who remind her of the choices she has made or is she running forward to think about the options she has? George finds she is confronted sooner than expected with circumstances she has no control over. Now there is not only herself to think of.

Mama’s Song is a beautiful story. Simple in style, it has a complex effect on the reader. I could not put this book down. I finished it with tears in my eyes (and all over the page) and my heart pounding.

Beaton has expertly and poignantly captured the drama of the difficult situations some teenage girls face. James Roy’s comment on the back cover says it so succinctly … “Anyone reading this book will watch a child become an adult, right before their eyes.”
