An Aussie Year

An Aussie Year is a fun-filled peek into the lives of five young children, and Warrigal, the dog. Each child has a different cultural background and together they introduce readers to the wonderful multicultural mix that is Australia.

I love the format of this book. It’s about learning while having a lot of fun reading. Each page is full of details to find and things to investigate as the reader follows Ned, Zoe, Lily, Kirra and Matilda on a year-long journey. They go to school, play, celebrate cultural diversity and visit amazing Australian places.

Special days are emphasized including those associated with other cultures. I challenge any reader, young or old, not to open the page for their birthday month without hoping to find something on their special day. Even if no birthday event exists, every child will find days to identify with. There’s weather, food, geography, flora, fauna, city life and country life. Even Book Week.

A sense of humour and a clever way with words, twisted, wound around and wrapped in speech bubbles make this book perfect for shared reading.

Tina Snerling’s distinctive images and world trails are colourful and bold. My favourite picture is Children’s Week where the kids are jumping through puddles. That joyful sense of fun is everywhere in Tina’s illustrations.

This is a clever example of an interactive book with no technology necessary. An Aussie Year will make children want to plan and share their own stories and adventures.

Recommended for schools, parents, independent young readers, in fact, recommended for everybody.

Australian Story

An Illustrated Timeline

by Tania McCartney

NLA Publishing (National Library of Australia). Australian, Picture Book. Paperback RRP $24.95

It’s all here, from the discovery of gold to Cathy Freeman’s Olympic glory, from dinosaurs to the Black Saturday bushfires. It’s a picture book that you can leaf through in five minutes, or find a lifetime of inspiration to follow. Australian Story isn’t the actual stories of Australia: it’s a tantalizing time line that will lure kids to find the history behind the images in the book.

Tania McCartney has done a brilliant job, choosing not just what events matter, but the ones that matter to kids- beginning, of course, with the dinosaur. The national library material she’s worked with is stunning: images, photos, paintings and sketches from their archives that tell our history in a way that is simple to understand but also beautiful.
This is a book that every six year old needs to read, to see as early as possible the threads of our history. It’s also a book that every high school should have, so the stories a history lover knows, can be put in chronological context.

Riley and the Grumpy Wombat

A journey around Melbourne

by Tania McCartney, illustrations by Kieron Pratt

Ford Street Publishing. Australian, Picture. Paperback, RRP $22.95

The intrepid Riley is off in his red bi-plane for his fourth adventure. This time he flies to my hometown of Melbourne and encounters a grumpy wombat. Riley wants to discover the reason for her grumpiness and help her but first needs to find her again.

McCartney’s concept of searching for the grumbly wombat is perfect for showcasing the sights of Melbourne and further afield in regional Victoria. Just a few of the many attractions included are: Bourke Street Mall, Flinders Street Station, St Kilda Beach, the Dandenong Ranges, Sovereign Hill and the Great Ocean Road.

The format follows the previous Riley books with black-and-white photographs, some of which were contributed by McCartney, overlaid by Pratt’s bright and cheeky illustrations. Numerous gadgets are at Riley’s disposal, something that kids will love (and wish for).

I loved the inclusion of Riley’s friends from his previous adventures. They hang from the plane’s wings and operate contraptions in a bid to find the wombat. An underlying thread of friendship and concern is evident.

Riley and the Grumpy Wombat is a great introduction to Melbourne for those that don’t know her and for those of us that do it might just make you yearn for a visit. It did me!

The fifth Riley adventure, Riley and the Jumpy Kangaroo: A journey around Canberra is due out in 2012. You can also read a review of the third Riley adventure Riley and the curious koala at Buzz Words Books.
